Metal deportment in Pb-Zn mine wastes from a historic tailings pond, Plombières, East Belgium

چکیده
The exploitation of mine waste materials as secondary resources requires in-depth mineralogical analyses, with metal deportment being particular relevance for recovery. Using a combination the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)-based Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) and Probe Micro-Analyser (EPMA) methods, lead zinc in historic Plombières site (East Belgium) was investigated. comprises four different materials: soil, metallurgical waste, brown yellow tailings. integration MLA EPMA data allowed identification quantification Pb- Zn-bearing phases, including minerals present low abundances well slag phases. Different types Pb oxides phases are main sources samples. These host 65 to 99 % Pb, rest is distributed between cerussite (0 37 %), and/or anglesite 17 %). Approximately 95 Zn hosted by slags or fraipontite, minor amounts contributed sphalerite (0.1 3 gahnite (1.0 2.4 willemite 2.9 bannisterite MLA/EPMA measurements were validated comparing calculated grades bulk measured X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. coefficients correlation values found be 0.89 0.80 zinc. Uncertainties on deportments estimated bootstrap resampling typically low. highest uncertainties observed when metal-bearing abundances, which particularly noticeable Considering promising results, integrated approach applied this study should applicable other metals deposits across globe.

Extremely High Phosphate Sorption Capacity in Cu-Pb-Zn Mine Tailings
Elevated inorganic phosphate (Pi) concentrations in pore water of amended tailings under direct revegetation may cause toxicity in some native woody species but not native forbs or herb species, all of which are key constituents in target native plant communities for phytostabilizing base metal mine tailings. As a result, Pi sorption capacity has been quantified by a conventional batch procedur...
متن کاملMineral Composition in Rhizosphere of Plants Grown in the Vicinity of a Zn-pb Ore Flotation Tailings Pond. Preliminary Study
Mineral forms in rhizosphere and bulk substrate were examined for selected plant species (Cardaminopsis arenosa, Calamagrostis epigeios, Deschampsia caespitosa, Festuca ovina, Silene vulgaris, Viola tricolor) growing spontaneously in the close vicinity of a tailings pond and in a zone of eolian transmission of waste particles. Samples of substrates and plant roots were taken from sites in the B...

Mining activity always has high impact on its surroundings, being waste deposition the cause of multiple and complex problems to the environment. One of them is Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), causing acid water percolation through large areas in the mine site. متن کاملCase History of a Copper Mine Tailings Pond Reclamation in Ducktown, Tennessee
Cessation of mining operations in Ducktown, TN, left 800-900 acres of barren copper mine tailings. Revegetation activities had met with limited success. In 1998, efforts for revegetation of the tailings materials began anew. The objective of this case history is to provide insight into decision making processes which resulted in conversion of 800-900 acres of barren mine tailings into a vegetat...
متن کاملCultivation-dependent and cultivation-independent characterization of the microbial community in acid mine drainage associated with acidic Pb/Zn mine tailings at Lechang, Guangdong, China.
Cultivation-based and molecular approaches were used to characterize the phylogenetic composition and structure of the microbial community in an extremely acidic (pH 2.0) acid mine drainage (AMD) associated with Pb/Zn mine tailings that were undergoing vigorous acid generation. Acidophilic bacteria were isolated and enumerated on solid media, and were found to be restricted to isolates related ...
